Just keep in mind Essentials features are only designed for a max of 75 users. Activating the VM should be fairly straightforward. I must add there are a couple of problems that should be addressed with the environment. Second, when running any roles or applications other than Hyper-V on the host, you only get one VM license. The reason for this is that the Standard license only permits running 2 instances of the OS for workloads, not 3. Aim is to eventually migrate the domain controller to Server Standard.

Are you able to help with resolution of this? Any help will be appreciated. Good day. To remove the essentials features, use the remove roles wizard in Server Manager or Remove-WindowsFeature Powershell cmdlet and remove Essentials role. Will following this process cause any applications that users are accessing to be unavailable during the upgrade? Does this still work with Server Essentials? Hello, is it possible to switch from Windows StandartEval server to Windows essential server..

I installed the standartEval version download on the net then I bought the essential license but when I upgrade I am told that it is impossible to migrate … and if I reinstall the machine with the essential Windows server while keeping the same domain name is that it will be reflected on the old users which was supported by the first StandartEval server. Unfortunately, downgrades are not possible with dism.

First you stand up a temporary ServerStandardEval server. This could be a virtual machine, or even a workstation system. You then add the temporary server to your existing active directory as a domain controller. Once all is replicated and you have migrated all roles in active directory over to the temporary server, you can demote the existing server. Next reinstall the operating system on the existing server.

Once reinstalled, you will make a domain controller with the temporary server. Lastly, move all roles from the temporary server to the reinstalled server and demote the temporary server. There are quite a few steps to make all this happen, but it is the only way to save your existing active directory. Or do you have to have a retail version?

Thank you. I purchased a new license for Standard and receive the following error. Any tips? Check that the specified product key is valid and that it matches the target edition. I am wondering if you purchased a volume license key for Standard.

If so, the error you are getting is normal. I did some checking though and found a workaround. If you upgrade using a retail or KMS key, you can then install a volume license key. When the license is converted to Standard from Essentials, are you left with the Essentials feature set?

I am not clear if the system stays as Essentials, but with a greater amount of CALS or the system properties will show Server Standard, a 2nd domain controller can be added to the domain etc. You’ve always been able to add additional domain controllers but in doing so you would need to purchase CALs of course. Converting to Standard leaves you with Standard. For some reason I thought additional domain controllers could not be added to an “Essentials Domain”.

You can have as many as you want. The limit is the Essentials machine has to be at the root of the forest, hold all FSMO roles and does not support trusts. United States English. Ask a question. Quick access. Open an administrative PowerShell command 3. Reboot when prompted. This isn’t working for me. I have a product key open license for Server Standard, which I’m using in the command. Check that the specified product key is valid and that it matches the target edition. To be clear – I am following this procedure to upgrade Server Essentials to Server Standard. I apologize for the confusion. I’m assuming that the process didn’t change for Server I don’t believe Essentials can perform a license conversion to Standard.

I think it is a full install situation. I couldn’t find any MSFT information that states that, but the only information I found related to license conversion was from Standard to Datacenter.

Where did the key you are using come from? Essentials to Standard conversion certainly is supported. Next, we purchased an open license for Server Standard, and this was the license key MAK I was unsuccessful in using for the conversion.

I called Microsoft Licensing thinking there was a problem with the product key, but they checked it, and it was good. At this point, I was pretty desperate – the server was a Domain Controller, and was going to shut down permanently in less than 24 hours. I don’t know, but I assumed there wasn’t going to be any seizing it back before it shut down.
